Teaching
As a Graduate Teaching Fellow at UNC Chapel Hill, I teach SOCI 129: Sociology of Religion and SOCI 422: Sociology of Mental Health and Illness to undergraduates. I enjoy teaching; it is an opportunity to invite students to explore their world from a new perspective and consider more deeply the social processes they may take for granted in their everyday lives. I encourage active participation and discussion in my courses. In course reviews, students frequently remark they appreciate my preparation, organization, and facilitation. They recognize my passion and knowledge for the subjects I teach and find me approachable and dedicated to clarifying course information and providing accommodation.

SOCI 129
Spring 2024
"She was kind and open about what she was expecting of us. Johannah never made us feel like our answers were invalid. Johannah was very respectful of all of us and made sure we knew she cared about our approach."
"Super friendly and was just fun to be in class. Also was clearly passionate and knows her stuff."
"She always provided slides and extra resources as promised. She provided many different examples and ways to learn the material. The course was not just lecturing it was discussion, activity, review."
"She has her assignments clearly laid out at the beginning of the semester which make it easy to organize with other classes and i never felt like I had too much going on for that class to the point of being overwhelmed. She also put the slides up so in case you had to miss, you could get the material, as well as she was also very good about emailing back and understanding of you had a conflict and would work through that with you."
Fall 2023
"Prof. Palomo really valued feedback from students who were raised in nonreligious, non-Christian households. As somebody who is Jewish, I found that my opinion mattered in class discussions, especially when the textbook centered more on its christian worldview."
"Professor Palomo was so lovely and accommodating to our individual needs and learning requirements. I really appreciated that and the learning environment she created."
"Johannah made learning possible for her students by providing lots of in class time to ask questions and discuss the subject matter. Johannah explained concepts in ways that were easily digestible by students unfamiliar with sociological terminology and followed the learning of these concepts with more challenging applications of what was learned in class."
"We used a variety of methods for learning including a textbook, an in depth ethnography, videos, lectures, and many different participative activities to learn. She did an excellent job at making sure everyone understood and interacted with the course material. She was fantastic at helping us learn about the sociology of religion in a comfortable, engaging, and inclusive manner."
"Johannah provided all students with all the resources necessary to learn the material properly. There was a clear syllabus that provided everything we needed, and she was available by email at reasonable hours. All PowerPoints with the information we learned that day were shared with us, and the test did not stray from what we learned."
